The list below provides accurate positions and identifications for 235
late-type stars in the Coalsack classified by Westerlund (1961ArA.....2..451W).
Some years ago I scanned paper photocopies of the published charts using the
Lowell PDS machine, and the resulting positions served as a basis for finding
the stars in more recent catalogues, notably the all-sky 2MASS survey.
However, for the present list nearly all the stars were re-examined using DSS
red-light images. Most of the star positions come from 2MASS or UCAC1.
I matched the completed list against the GSC, MSX5C, IRAS (point- and
serendipitous-source catalogues), and GCVS v4.1/NSV, and did some searches
in SIMBAD (though incomplete).
I've rounded Westerlund's photographic-infrared magnitudes to 0.1 mag.
precision, and have omitted his R-I colors entirely. His magnitudes are
reasonably consistent with the far-red (IV-N plate) magnitudes in USNO-B1.0.
I obtained photo-blue magnitudes as available from USNO-B1.0, GSC-2.2, and
(in a few cases) SuperCOSMOS or other sources. A number of variable stars are
listed by Westerlund. Maximum brightnesses are shown in the 'mi' column with
a "v" suffix. The ranges of these stars are mostly less than 1.0 mag.
according to Westerlund; none of them appear in the GCVS v4.1 or NSV.
Westerlund also indicated a number of candidate early-M supergiants,
signaled by their being both bright and strongly reddened (the luminosity class
is of course indeterminate on the low-dispersion spectra). These are marked
in the spectral-type column with "I?", e.g. star S 22 is given as type M1I?.
At least one of these (R 53) has indeed been found to be luminous by others.
The remarks and notes include spectral types determined by MacConnell
(MacC) in his southern IRAS survey (VizieR catalogue III/170). A comparison
suggests the Westerlund types are on average about one spectral class earlier
relative to MacConnell, which may be due to the systematic difference between
the Case and Mount Wilson/MK systems among M stars. For a few brighter stars
types are also available from the Stockholm survey by Loden et al.
(1976A&AS...23..283L). Overall the consistency among the three sources is
good. Types derived from Vilnius photometry by Straizys et al.
(1994BaltA...3..199S) are shown in the notes in lower-case letters.
There are additional 600 red stars listed by Westerlund in the southern
part of the Coalsack in a companion paper (1961ArA.....2..429W), but the
charts are abysmal, and it will be very difficult to recover these stars.
