The list below contains accurate coordinates and IDs for the 801 Vatican
emission-line stars published in a series by Coyne et al. Not all the stars
are present in SIMBAD, and some are given by name only (without coordinates).
Though the VES catalogue includes semi-accurate coordinates, I identified the
stars ab initio from the published charts, and then compared the completed list
against major catalogues and SIMBAD to find identifications and other
information.
In general I give 'best' coordinates, preferably from Tycho-2 or 2MASS,
but have used GSC-ACT or GSC-2.2 for fainter stars. Little proper motion is
expected for these stars, so these positions should be entirely satisfactory.
I show GSC names as available. I matched the list against the HD/E, BD,
Dearborn red stars, IRAS, MSX, and GCVS v4.1 catalogues using VizieR. I then
looked up every star in SIMBAD using a 3' search radius to find additional
links. Having a number of old spectral surveys already included in the
database made the synergism that's possible from SIMBAD very evident.
So that the list is somewhat self-contained, I give complete HD/BD/GCVS
names (in order of preference) even if these are present in SIMBAD. Other
aliases are shown only if not present in SIMBAD or exist as separate entries in
the database. Some stars have as many as four entries for the same object in
SIMBAD. A substantial number of more complicated sorts of database corrections
have been sent to Gerard Jasniewicz for his consideration, and he has already
fixed SIMBAD for the great majority. Numerous finder charts and source
catalogues external to the VES were examined to verify identifications.
Many of the stars, particularly in the early set of papers, are not
early-type emission-line stars, but instead M giants, where the sharp TiO
bandhead at 6544A had been mistaken for H-alpha emission on the objective-prism
plates. Thus links with the Dearborn, IRAS, and MSX catalogues are important.
These and other identifications and comments are given in the remarks at the
end of each line, or in longer notes at bottom of the table, indicated by an
asterisk next to the star number.
The very similar survey by Martin McCarthy (1976VatOP...1..213M) has
already been dealt with, and sent to the usual suspects (including
http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/Mail/vsnet-id/msg00714.html).
Nomenclature for these stars is well taken care of in SIMBAD, as shown
in the citations to follow.
