Dear Dr. Kato:

It turns out that the suspect object in NGC4856 is most probably a
field star which was previously seen by Dr. H. Corwin in his survey
of southern galaxies on UK 1.2-m Schmidt plates.  I append his
message to this letter.  Please advise Dr. Fujita that no further
action is needed, again with our thanks for his help.

Prof. de Vaucouleurs,
     The star measured by Fujita is almost certainly the same
one which I noted in ESGC.  I looked at the blue PSS print 
again on Monday and found the star to be 9-10 arcsec from the
approximate center of the overexposed central bulge in position
angle 150+- deg.  These "measurements" are uncertain since I
could not locate the nucleus, but agree -- within my estimated
errors -- with the relative position estimated by Fujita.
     Because the star's image is on the edge of the overexposed 
region, I could not estimate a magnitude.  However, its 
appearance is not inconsistent with Bill's estimate of about
15.5 or Fujita's measurement of 15.1.
