[vsnet-chat 921] RV: comments NGC 4462 Thank

:

            "Dear observers :

Thank you for your clarifications about the delay in
announcing the SN98bn discovery. It is a shame that the scientific method
demands the loss of earlier stages in bright SN rises. But we are confident
with the development of observer networks such as VSnet, AAVSO News Flash,
etc. this problem will eventually be resolved.

We believe that it is true that the four-step process
described by Dr. Kato in his commentaries distributed by VSnet chat are
valid and we support his opinion that the second and fourth steps are very
difficult to accomplish, especially the fourth step (spectrum) for
non-professional astronomers such as us. For this reason, we think that
these "rules" abort the rapid announcement of SN discovery, losing a
fundamental period in SN rise.

According to comments made by Dr. Wamsteker, Scientific
director of VILSPA, the first spectrum obtained with IUE satellite of the
SN 93J, the night of March 30th 1993, took one hour to obtain ; after 48
hours the same spectrum took 12 hours... "
