From John Greaves: === Thanks to Brian for the response. All the IR sources are the same object then, giving an evolved luminous star. The error box point is well taken It's always a bit scary when a candidate crops up so close to an error box centre! (Happens to come out true occasionally, of course, just due to randomness). I note the good point re density of field, though. On the Nova Crucis 2003 issue: Things like this need to be out. Slightly askance but somewhat related is a similar very recent thread on the minor planet mailing list archives about photometric band usage and mpec policy that I've been watching. Which in itself is a resurgent thread. Basically, in all instances, professionals being polite and quiet and patient about it, noting the matter privately, has led to bugger all being done, and meanwhile things just tick along being wrong and _scientifically_ innaccurate, somewhat due to the matter being ignored by relevant professional/paid authorities. (The scientific point being that ostensibly, unless one is part of the 'cognescenti', these things can lead to people making errors in their own science if they are not aware of these esoteric conventions/wrongnesses). On the other hand, some of this same patience results in quite tolerant behaviour towards us amateurs too, so I shouldn't complain ;^) On the other, other hand, at least we amateurs have an excuse for making a boghole of things. Cheers John PS it should be taken as read now that forwarding of matters variable to vsnet is standard.
