Introduction of the 77th Name List in VS organizations As can be expected, different variable star organizations have reacted differently on the recent release of the 77th Name List. VSNET has incorporated these new official designations within one day of the release (when it was available on the web) of this catalog. As seen from the reports from different organizations, many observers quickly reacted on these nomenclatures -- Yes!, this world-wide reaction is quite comtemporary in the internet era. From AAVSO News Flash No. 1172 (2003 June 6), it is evident that the priority of the AAVSO was in assigning Harvard designations rather than an introduction of Name List 77: "this update does NOT include changes needed as a result of the publication of the 77th Name List (IBVS 5422). These changes will be made at a later date". I see this is one of the hidden side-effects of the continuous usage of the Harvard designations. If they introduced the GCVS names as the unique designator, the suggested changes would have been done much quickly... Regards, Taichi Kato
