I remember Frank Bateson did an article in an RASNZ Variable Star Section Report on short-lived pre-outbust rises of CV's. It was some years back, maybe 10(?). He went through a lot of outbursts of CVs and a number of very short outbursts were reported visually in association with a number of these. I am sure someone like Stan Walker could add more details.
