We've just heard that a new gamma-ray burst has
occurred, perhaps the brightest one that the
BATSE instrument on CGRO has ever detected.
The preliminary position for this GRB is
05h 09m 31s +11d 11' 24" J2000
with positional error +/- 2arcmin. The
burst occurred at 16h UT 991216.
Since this object is transiting in Europe,
we should hear shortly if an optical counterpart
has been discovered. However, since the error
box is so small, just about any amateur CCD system
should cover it. You might consider taking some
images of the field tonight and see what you can
detect. We will be observing with the 1.3-m
telescope about 0300 UT, when the field rises
above the 1.55-m dome.
