G'day all,

Fernie refers to the "Lafler-Kinman class of methods" which includes
string-length and various PDM-type techniques. All of these are
characterized by a "scatter statistic" vs frequency -type plot; where
the "scatter statistic" falls to a minimum at the correct frequency.
To me, it seems Fernie's method could be used to find the (local)
extremes of any function??
