[vsnet-unknown 10] re EF Aql
I investigated the archival plates from the USNOFS PMM server yesterday
after Michael made his post...
...red plates _centred_ on GSC 5158 1543 show it to be variable with
large amplitude, and at a brightness near maximum in 1985.7 that is not
inconsistent with Michael's 300 day period.
...GSC 5158 1675 is visible on the same plates looking pretty much
constant throughout. I fact, I used it as the "comparison star"!
EF Aql also appears in the AC2000 as a "single image" detection at BT
11.7, no doubt a past maximum, at the same location as GSC 5158 1543.
[It is a bit surprising for a relatively unknown variable to have such a
good GCVS position ;) ]

PS there are 16.2 million objects in 2MASS 2idr... ...of those having
USNO red counterparts and full J, H and Ks photometry, 0.1 million have
red(usno_A2.0) - J > 6.
Some will be due to extinction, at the fainter end some will be due to
bad USNO mags, and some will be due to bad USNO cross-IDs. A lot will be
red variables.
EF Aql has red(usno_A2.0) - J of 7.0
