Hola everyone -
On a pair of photographs (85mm f/1.4 lens, Tech Pan film, orange filter)
taken Dec. 22.3356 and Dec. 22.3366, apparently the star GSC 8257 1390,
which is listed as having magnitude 13.4 and a position (2000) RA 12h 50m
01.06s, Dec. -52d 01'26.04" (position error 0.4") , appeared at magnitude
10.5. A un-filtered CCD frame taken at Dec. 23.3461 shows the star even
brighter at magnitude 8.82 (Hipparcos-Tycho comparison stars). Its
measured position (end figures 01.13s, 26.8" with uncertainties +/- 0.7")
agrees well with the GSC position. However, the image of the GSC star on
the DSS plate taken with the UK 48-inch Schmidt on 23/04/76 appears
slightly diffuse and elongated towards the northwest. More observations
requested !
I will try to get a low-resolution sprectrum tonight although I see that
there is a fog bank on the western horizon.
All the best wishes for the Holidays and the New Year to everyone. Bill
Liller
