(fwd) Finding the right focal lenght for Novae Search

This message is from Cristovao Jacques Lage de Faria:

Hello,

We intend to begin our CCD telephoto survey for novae in the Milky Way and
comets in low elongation regions. I'd like to hear some advice if anyone
has experience with this kind of survey. We have an AP-7 and St-7 CCD camera
and a 70-210 mm lens. We have done some experience with the AP7 camera and
obtained with a 70mm lens, a limiting magnitude of aprox. 10 in 30 seconds
exposures with a 70"/pixel scale and astrometry residual of about 5".The
field is 10 x 10 degrees. With this setup we can cover the Sagittarius region
in about 10 minutes with 9 exposures.Increasing the focal length we gain in
magnitude but we loose in field coverage, so what will be the best FL.

Do you also recomend any kind of filter?

Best regards,

Cristovao Jacques
