HR Carinae has been on the observing program of the the VSS, RASNZ for at least 40 years, but the comparison stars are few in number and have not been updated. Fortunately, with the release of Tycho-2 data it is quite easy to set up an extensive sequence for this bright variable. If one wishes to look deeply at stars within 10' of HR Car, down to 14.0V or so, there is a nice, short paper by A.M. van Genderen et al, Astron. Astrophys 246,407-410 (1991). They give the distance to HR as 5kpc+/-1 kpc. Luminosity is Mbol ~-8.9, making it consistent with other LBVs. Using data from Tycho-2 and the van Genderen paper, I have compiled the following V sequence. The stars below 10.0 would probably get little use. Star RA 2000 DEC 2000 V B-V Source Remarks. ====================================================== HD 89740 10:19:40.71 -59:08:45.9 6.95 -0.12 T HD 90274 10:23:42.42 -59:12:21.8 7.07 1.10 T HD 90087 10:22:20.88 -59:45:19.7 7.79 0.03 vG RASNZ a, 7.7 HD 90313 10:23:54.98 -59:30:47.9 8.37 0.35 vG RASNZ b, 8.4 HD 90436 10:24:50.67 -59:47:32.7 9.15 -0.04 T RASNZ c, 8.6 Note 1. Astrophys. 246,407-410 (1991). Notes: 1) HD 90436. Buscombe (1994) gives V=9.24, B-V =0.02 (source not given). The long adopted visual mag. of 8.6 (Series 1 charts, VSS, RASNZ), is in need of revision. There is a companion 48" to the NE (HD 305136, 9.80V). 2) CPD-58 2165 and -59 2100. Photometry is taken from Tycho-2 (no suitable stars in vG list). Probable errors are of the order of +/- 0.060 in V, +/- 0.068 in B-V. Regards, Mati Morel morel@ozemail.com.au
