[vsnet-id 673] Sanduleak NGP red stars



     Although few of the stars shown below are known variables, many of them
are clearly chromospherically-active spotted or flare stars, so is relevant
to this list.

     The list below shows accurate coordinates and IDs, plus photometry,
spectral types, and motions for a list of M dwarfs found by Sanduleak near
the north galactic pole (1976AJ.....81..350S).  All the stars appear in SIMBAD
but mostly with only the original approximate coordinates.  The data on motions
and UBV from later follow-up papers are not usually included in the SIMBAD
headers.
     I used the coordinates from Jones & Klemola (1977AJ.....82..593J) as a
basis for getting positions for all the stars using the charts in the 
Sanduleak paper.  Because most of the stars have substantial proper motion,
I have used either 2MASS or GSC-2.2 to obtain recent-epoch positions.
     The motions in columns 'pmA' and 'pmD' are taken directly from
Jones & Klemola, and are expressed in milliarcsec/year.  The original motions
are given as arcsec/century, and are tied to galaxies and thus should be close
to absolute proper motions.  The uncertainties are not specified, but the later
complete NPM1 catalogue from the same plate material indicates errors of
5 mas/year; the ones here are surely not better.
     UBVI(k) photometry and spectral types for many of the stars are given
(or cited) by Pesch & Dahn (1982AJ.....87..122P), from which I show V, B-V,
and the types.  When V (at least) is not available, I show photo-blue
magnitudes from USNO-A2.0 as a placeholder.  Most of the stars have 2MASS
photometry, from which the J-K color can be used as a temperature/spectral type
indicator to confirm the IDs and classifications.
     Approximate radial velocities are given for 20 of these stars by Dawson
(1981AJ.....86.1200D), but I do not show these here.
     I was not able to recover stars 188 and 205.  Curiously, Pesch & Dahn
show photometry for both, so they must have located them!
     I looked up each position in SIMBAD, and show a number of IDs in the
notes at the bottom of the table.  A number of the stars are chromospherically
active, so numerous x-ray source links can be made.  I also matched the list
against GCVS v4.1 and IRAS in VizieR.  The variable KY Com is apparently
identified accurately for the first time.

     In SIMBAD the biblio for many of the stars includes papers not related
to these stars, but instead to Sanduleak's list of luminous SMC members
(Sk xxx).  The most noticeable one is Ardeberg's photometric survey
(1980A&AS...42....1A).  This paper lists the SMC stars with the acronym
'Sand', which is surely why it is cited for the red stars.  This paper should
be deleted from these red stars and added to the relevant 'Sk' star biblio.
Stars 1 and 4 (perhaps others) also show the citation 1996Ap&SS.238...59P,
which again pertains to SMC stars.
