Star-catalogue folks, As a test out of curiosity, I have identified the first 50 stars in the Dearborn red stars catalogue. I first matched the source positions against Tycho-2 using a 4 arcmin search radius (the Dearborn positions are well known to be rather poor). In nearly all cases, a likely candidate was found, showing relatively red Tycho color and matching closely in brightness. At least in this sample, the Dearborn magnitudes are not far from standard V and not significantly brighter than V, as expected. I did a similar match with the IRAS point-source and faint-source catalogues in VizieR, and finally a BD and GCVS match-up (a large fraction of the later-type stars will be variable). A few errors were dealt with individually, including stars more than 4' from nominal, and one Dec sign error. I looked up each star in SIMBAD to seek additional IDs. The resulting list is shown below in a fairly obvious format. All the coordinates are from Tycho-2 (code T in column 's') except two fainter stars from GSC-ACT (code G). Many of the BD names and all the IRAS faint-source names are new to SIMBAD, and numerous new IDs are indicated (e.g. DO 1 = PPM 700002 = IRAS 00025+0027). Nearly all the stars were within 2'.5 of the catalogue position. The Tycho-2 and TASS V,I photometry shows that most of the stars are indeed red, but some blunders appear among the fainter stars, some of which are less red than K0 giants. Overall, the sample suggests the main value in going through the list will be to clean up the existing database at least as much as having the spectral types for the stars (e.g. IRAS objects). With 44,000 stars, fixing this catalogue will be a big task due to the rough coordinates. \Brian ------------------- 1947AnDea...5....1L LEE O.J., BALDWIN R.J., HAMLIN D.W., BARTLETT T.J., GORE G.D., BALDWIN T.J.
