I have studied the Hodge & Wright Atlas of the SMC, and there appears to be a star which matches the position given by Bill Liller for his nova-like object. It can be seen on both V and B atlas charts, at about mag. 16.5, but is missing in the USNO-A2.0 cat. My estimated position is (2000) 0h46m27.2s -73o29'41". It is best seen on chart 102V, just to to the NW of the emission neb. Henize 17, and on chart 107B it is 53mm due E of the faint variable LV 5. On the latter chart it is easily found, it being the only prominent star in the vicinity (though it may be only 16th mag!). It is difficult to estimate these mags accurately, as sequence stars much below 13.0 are scarce in this region. I used the OB star Sand. 10 (V = 13.20, B-V = -0.21), as one reference, otherwise USNO-A2.0 mags were used Position of Sand. 10 : (2000) 0h46m42.2s -73o24'56" Liller's star can also be easily found on a S. Gaposchkin's Maps of SMC Variables (1966), at about 16mag Regards, Mati Morel morel@ozemail.com.au http://vsnet.ozemail.com.au/~morel .
