New S stars
While doing some other work, I went through two recent lists of S-type
stars published after the second Stephenson S-stars catalogue (1984). Both
need a modest amount of work in SIMBAD.
The first list below of four stars is from MacConnell's recent paper.
All I have done here is to improve the positions (he published USNO-A1.0
positions that have some slop due to not being on the ICRS system). I have
also identified the two non-IRAS stars in the new MSX catalogue.
The larger list is from Stephenson's 1990 paper. This turns out to have
been worked into SIMBAD poorly. I'm guessing the main problem stems from the
Chen et al. IRAS cross-IDs (1995A&AS..113...51C). Their IDs are correct for
the most part, but in SIMBAD the IRAS positions were left in, rather than
Stephenson's, so the accuracy of the coordinates was significantly degraded.
Evidently some transcription errors also occur. External comparison shows that
Stephenson's original positions have 1-sigma errors of about 3". These allowed
ready identification in various visible-light and IR catalogues. Below the
complete list is given with Stephenson's position's restored, or with better
positions substituted.
The columns should be self-evident. Column 's' shows a code for the
source of the position: A = USNO-A2.0, F = FASTT (Sloan calibration regions,
1999AJ....118.2488S), G = GSC-ACT, M = 2MASS 2nd release; if this column is
blank, the position is Stephenson's precessed to equinox 2000. The MSX
positions have errors similar to Stephenson's (3"-5", about double the quoted
internal error), so I have not used any of these.
Among the IDs, I show all IRAS matches, and where there is no IRAS
detection, I give the MSX name as available. Various SIMBAD IDs are also
shown. Longer comments are given at the bottom indicated by an asterisk
following the star name. Some of the stars are catalogued as carbon type,
and it is clear that the distinction is subtle for transitional cases when
examined on low-dispersion objective-prism plates.
Note on nomenclature: Some (but not all) the Stephenson 1990 stars are
listed in SIMBAD with two names with acronyms 'CSS xx' and 'CSS2 xx' (e.g.
CSS2 35 = CSS 35). This is unfortunate since the main 2nd Stephenson S-stars
catalogue has the acronym 'CSS'. Those CSS2 stars with such double
designations should have the 'CSS' form suppressed.
