Although the magnitudes in the Stephenson carbon-star catalogue are
admittedly quite rough, I note that he lists CGCS 4490 as 'i' magnitude 8
(i.e. photographic-infrared, about 8500A---should be called 'far-red' these
days). Would a carbon star have faded to mag. 10 at J even if variable?
(Presumably the variations are very small at JHK wavelengths.)
Does anyone have a rough guide to the relationship between spectral
type and, say, the J-K colors from 2MASS?
