The SIMBAD scheme, although not perfect is nevertheless consistent and
workable. Here are some examples copied from the SIMBAD header output:
V* mu.01 Sco * mu.01 Sco [B10] 4277
CD-37 11033 CPC 18 8337 CPD-37 6761 ....etc
V* nu. Her * nu. Her * 94 Her
AG+30 1651 BD+30 3093 GC 24478 .....
V* tau09 Eri * tau09 Eri * 36 Eri
CD-24 2022 CPD-24 493 FK5 2287 .....
V* MU Sco SV* HV 6570
V* MU Cep SV* P 2335 CSV 5549
GSC 03990-00664 com : is not * mu. Cep
V* mu. Cep * mu. Cep ADS 15271 A
AG+58 1378 BD+58 2316 CCDM J21435+5847A....
V* U Her BD+19 3098 DO 15502
GC 22107 GCRV 9456 GEN# +1.00148206....
* 68 Her * u Her ADS 10449 A .....
V* pi.05 Ori * pi.05 Ori * 8 Ori
AG+02 505 BD+02 810 FK5 180
This should be enough to show the basic idea.
