I observe both of these variables; so I followed the precedent(?) set by
the electronic version of the GCVS for my database:
- MU Cen (the UG) stayed as "MU CEN"
- mu Cen (the bright GCAS) became "MIU CEN"
Similarly, if I begin observing a "nu..." it would be renamed "NIU".
The electronic GCVS contains other examples. This probably doesn't help
you with SIMBAD but it certainly clarifies my database. Of course the
important thing is to be _consistent_; which is the main reason I copied
the GCVS idea.
You might think that any variable named "MU..." or "NU..." would always
be much fainter than a star "mu..." or "nu..." - but not always. The
variable NU Pav, for example, is 5th magnitude. Don't rely on "obvious"
differences in brightness!
Because I'm using VSSOBS 3.6 (the RASNZ data entry program) to do my
reports, using lowercase letters for variable names isn't possible.
