Subject: RX Mon

Dear Dr. Kato,

The confusion around RX Mon started a long, long time ago. The
variable star (7.1908) was discovered by Lidia Ceraski (or Ceraska;
published by her husband, W. Ceraski, AN, 1908, 177, 351, with very
approximate coordinates). In Geschichte and Literatur, 2nd Edition,
Vol. 2, Prager states that the star was misidentified by M.V. Baranof
(spelling of the original publication; Prager writes "Baranow"),
Publ. Obs. Engelhardt, No. 7, 1913, and subsequently by K. Dubrowsky
(AN, 1924, 223, 57). Really, Baranof's star, for which he gives accurate
coordinates, is GSC 4825.1641, not the Hipparcos star, which is RX Mon
beyond any doubt, directly from Hipparcos photometry. Prager recommends
a finding chart from: C. Hoffmeister, Mitt. Sternw. Sonneberg, 1924,
No. 6. I have checked the chart, it is correct. The GCVS suggests
I. Stein, Atlas Stellarum Variabilium, Ser. IX, 1941. In fact, this
is not a chart, but a table. This table is consistent not with
Hoffmeister's chart but with AAVSO Charts and indicates to
GSC 4825.2160.

I am going to change the GCVS chart reference for the star to
Sonneberg Mitt Nr. 6.

Best regards
Kolya Samus
