[vsnet-id-2mass 37] The "reddest" 2MASS star

Taking "redness" to mean the largest value of RED(usno_a2.0) - J in the
2MASS catalogue for 2MASS objects known to have positions within 2" of
the associated USNO A2.0 star, reasonable RED(usno_a2.0) colours and H
and K photometry also available in 2MASS, we find that:

2MASS 0551292+441637 = IRAS PSC 05478+4415

is the "reddest" 2MASS star with RED(usno_a2.o) - J of 11.75
[RED(usno_a2.0) = 18.7

This may well be the LPV LN Aurigae, which has a GCVS 4 position nearly
2' south, but is flagged as being uncertain in declination at the
arcminute level.

The close "second reddest" 2MASS objects [by the above criteria] has
RED(usno_a2.0) - J = 11.48 and is 2MASS 2023349+394807, with no other
candidate object near except IRAS PSC 20217+3938, which has a 12" error
ellipse centred 10" to the East.

That this star is actually variable is evidenced by USNOFS PMM plate
server archive images, specifically the 1991.6016 and 1995.4593 POSS II
plates.

[About 15th on this list is MisV0839 = 2MASS 1758508-203345 at
RED(usno_a2.0)-J=10.27]
