           Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV)

                        Status Report #2

                December 17, 1993 @ 11:00 a.m. EST

Note: These reports will be issued less frequently than my Servicing Mission
reports, probably once or twice a week unless events warrant more
       frequent updates.

Activities since last report and current status:

SMS93350 load successfully uplinked and executing nominally.

  Pointing Control Systems:

Acquisition of Fixed Head Star Tracker (FHST) maps continues.

High Gain/Low Gain Gyro Bias updates continue.

FHST/Gyro alignments performed based on six large slews. Values uplinked
and confirmed via test large angle slews.

Magnetometers continue to operate nominally, with less noise than old MSS's.

Initial jitter estimates look good, with substantial improvement compared
to early results with original solar arrays.

  Power Systems:

Nominal. Average maximum battery state of charge is about 500 Amphr.
Solar Array output is about 154 amps. SADE1 function is nominal.

  GHRS:

aperture window and second vent door opened. Pressure is at 1.0e-6 Torr.

aliveness test indicates Side 2 and Redundancy Kit functioning normally.
(Side 2 data has successfully been read out through the RK to Side A
       of the spacecraft).

Side 2 detector initial operations test provided successful high-voltage
turn-on and indications that dark-count is lower than pre-Servicing
Mission (about 20% lower per Steve Hulbert).

Side 2 light path verification successful.

  FOS:

Successfully executed low-voltage turn-on and pressure measurement on both
sides of instrument. Pressure at 0.316e-6 Torr.

Initial high-voltage turn-on for Blue Side and Red side successful.

FOS/BL Internal operations test executed and verified Science Data
Interface and general operations. All is nominal.

  FOC:

High-voltage turned on, internal flat-field images taken.

  WFPC2:

continues in fine health. Decontamination sequence continues with CCD's
    held at about -20 degrees.

Upcoming Events:

 In SMS350:

Transition to 4-gyro mode will occur at 16:20 UT today (12/17). During this
transition, gyros 1 and 2 will be turned off. 4, 5, 6 will be used for
normal operations, with gyro 3 on as a backup to 4-6.

   Guide Star acquisition tests.

WFPC2 articulated fold mirror (AFM) turn-on and checkout, setting to
         nominal values.

WFPC2 pick-off mirror (POM) observations and adjustments.

12/26/93: begin deployment of COSTAR DOB and FOS & FOC mirrors.

Status of items serviced during HST FSM:

  Solar Arrays: nominal
  SADE1: nominal
Gyros (RSU's and ECU's): all 6 fully functional
  Magnetometers: both nominal
  GHRS Redundancy Kit: functionality verified
  WFPC2: nominal, optical performance TBD
  Costar: nominal, optical performance TBD
  Coprocessor: nominal
  Fuses: nominal
