Subj:	Status of AE Aqr obs. plans

______________

Observers-

The following campaign on AE Aqr is looking for additional support at
IR and near-IR wavelengths. A status report on the campaign appears
below.

______________

Dear Colleague,
Below is the present status of observing allocation for the forthcoming
WAD#5 & WET campaigns on AE Aqr in October.

1.	ROSAT (PSPC)	PI: Osborne
20 October	01:28 - 01:39 UT
		04:42 - 05:06 UT
		06:19 - 06:46 UT
		19:11 - 19:41 UT
		20:49 - 21:17 UT

21 October	01:21 - 01:33 UT
		02:58 - 03:20 UT
		04:35 - 05:00 UT
		06:13 - 06:39 UT
                19:05 - 19:35 UT

22 October	01:14 - 01:28 UT
		02:52 - 03:14 UT

A total of 16 ksec

2.	IUE	PI: de Martino
A total of 4 shifts have been allocated (2 carried over + 2 ToO)
These will be scheduled to maximize overlap with ROSAT observations
(i.e. in the period 20-22 October)

A total of 4 x 8 = 32 hours

3.	SAAO	PIs: Buckley & O'Donoghue
(i)	Spectroscopy
The 1.9-m telescope is scheduled for the period 19-25 October inclusive
for moderate resolution (~1-2) Angstroms, high-speed (~2 sec resolution),
spectroscopy, using the photon counting Reticon detector. The UT coverage for
AE Aqr at this time of year at SAAO is ~17:40 - 22:00.

(iii) High-Speed photometry
As part of the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) network, three weeks of telescope
time have been scheduled. The first two (5-18 October) are on the 0.75-m
telescope, and the last (19-25 October) on the 1.0-m telescope. The 2-channel
UCT photometer will be used, probably in "white-light".

(iv)	UBVRIJHKL photometry
Both the 0.5-m and 0.75-m telescopes will be used in the period 19-25 October
to undertake UBVRI (0.5-m) and JHKL (0.75-m) photometry of AE Aqr.
High speed JHKL photometry of AE Aqr may also be attempted in this period.

4.	WET campaign	PI: O'Donoghue

The following observatories will definitely be participating in the October WET
campaign:

Observatory Tel.	Coverage Observers
SAAO, South Africa	30"/40"	5-25 October	Warner, Buckley, O'Donoghue
Nordic, La Palma	?	19-? October	Solheim
McDonald, Texas 36"	21-27 October	??
Itajuba, Brazil 60"	14-21 October	Kepler
Hawaii 24"	9-23 October	Horne + ?
MJUO, New Zealand	1m 13-21 October Sullivan (high speed)
MSSSO, Australia	40"	?15-25? October	Wickramasinghe, Bessell, Wu
Perth, Australia	24"	17-23 October	Birch

Several other observatories may also be involved during the period ~12 - 25
October. These could include Wise (Israel), Kavular (India), and Poland.

5.	JCMT	PI: Abada-Simon
Two half-shifts on the JCMT at 0.8mm have been allocated for 17 & 18 October.

6.	CSO (Caltech Sub-mm Observatory, Hawaii)	PI: Abada-Simon
Observations with the CSO at 1.3mm are scheduled for the period 17-19 October.

7.	VLA	PI: Abada-Simon
Time allocations have been granted to observe AE Aqr at 1.3, 2, 3.6 & 6 cm
on 17 & 18 October, from 22:30 to 03:30 U.T.

8.	INT	PIs:	Martinez-Pais & Mouchet
High resolution spectroscopic observations with the INT, principally at H-alpha
, are sceduled for 4 nights (20-23 October).

9.	MSSSO	PIs:	Buckley & Lawson
The MSO 1.9-m telescope is scheduled for the period 20-24 October to perform
moderate resolution Cassegrain spectroscopy.

10.	Air-shower TeV gamma ray observations	PIs: de Jager & Meintjes
Observartions using the University of Potchefstroom gamma ray telescopes will
be carried out during the WET campaign on AE Aqr. The exact dates are as yet
unkown, as are the UT times, although they are expected to be in the region
18:00 - 22:00 UT.

11.	Universitaets-Sternwarte Muenchen:	PIs: Barwig, Bobinger, Mantel &
Wolf
Observations are scheduled for the period 18-25 October with the 0.8-m
telescope, equipped with a multi-channel fibre fed UBVRI photometer (MCCP),
and a spectrophotometer (MEKASPEK), covering the region 3800-9000A. Both
instruments are capable of millisecond resolution.

12.	HST UV Spectroscopy
Last, but by no means least, after initial rejection, Director's Discretionary
time has been tentatively scheduled on AE Aqr during the second ROSAT observing
period, on October 21.

13. Calar Alto 4100-5000A spectroscopy at 2.2m telescope (P.I.:Reinsch).
 Wavelength range: 4200-5200A; 60A/mm;

	Oct. 18, 18:30-22:30 UT,
	Oct. 19, 18:30-22:30 UT,
	Oct. 20, 18:30-22:30 UT,
	Oct. 21, 18:30-22:30 UT,

There are several other proposals for which I have heard no further
information, these include:

(b)	ASCA (Astro-D) hard X-ray observations (Barrett, de Jager, Mukai...)

The following is scheduled to take place in late August, so is not directly
relevant to the WET/WAD campaign:
WHT H-alpha spectropolarimetry (Horne, Marsh & Donati)

And the following have been definitely rejected:
(i)	IRAM interferometer at 3.4mm (Abada-Simon)
(ii)	CGRO hard X-ray/gamma ray observations (Bookbinder, Barrett, de Jager)
Although assessed as an "A" proposal, the observation was not granted due to AE
Aqr's location (no other interesting targets nearby, or in the FoV of GRO
instruments).

I expect several other observatories (e.g. in Australia & NZ) to be involved
in photometric observations, either high-speed (supporting the WET campaign),
or UBV(RI) photometry.
