\noindent {\it This conference will be the next of a series of meetings
organized in a different place in the world
every one or two years (the last
were the ``2nd Haifa Conference'' in January, 1993,
the ''Vi\~na del Mar Workshop''
in 1991 and the ''Santa Fe Workshop'' in 1989).
A strong need of interaction and discussion is felt by workers in
the lively field of CV's and there are now
new open problems that have become a matter
of debate, so we aim at enlivening and
stimulating the discussion.}

\noindent {\bf Topics in the Preliminary Scientific Programme:}
Cataclysmic Variables: secular evolution and role of the secondary,
outburst physics. Classical
Novae: thermonuclear runaway, understanding of the spectral evolution,
hibernation, magnetic field of the components. Recurrent novae:
their role and significance in the general picture.
Dwarf novae: disk instabilities, accretion physics. Polars and
Intermediate Polars: what are the progenitors of the AM Her stars?
New achievements from multiwavelength observations. The identification
and evolutionary role of the ``supersoft X-ray sources''.
Open problems in the evolution of
close binaries (e.g., can CV's be progenitors of type I SNe or undergo
accretion induced collapse?).
\noindent
Special stress will be put on the links between different classes of CV's.
We plan to leave ample space in the sessions to new observational
results with high scientific input.
\noindent A novelty in this meeting will be a poster session
and an informative discussion in which the
contributions by national and international amateurs astronomers'
associations are presented and commented.
\bigskip
\noindent {\bf Abano Terme} is a small thermal resort which is only
8 km away from the centre of Padova. Frequent buses run to town
and to the Padova University in 20-30 minutes. {\bf Padova} is an ancient
university town, with a very pretty historical centre with many
historical buildings and artistic beauties, included Giotto's
``Cappella degli Scrovegni'' and the University ``Anatomy Theatre''.
Abano itself is sorrunded by a very beautiful countryside
with many hills. The famous ``Ville Venete'' are quite close and Venice
is only 40 Km away. We plan a long and interesting excursion to Venice,
from noontime to the evening.

\noindent {\bf Some practical details :}
A registration fee of \$200 and will cover
coffee/tea breaks, the proceedings, and a kit containing stationery material
and information about the Padova/Venice aerea.
The expected price of hotels is about \$50 per day
in a confortable 2 beds room,
including breakfast and evening dinner and use of the thermal pools.
We hope that a limited number of travel grants will be available.

\noindent {\bf The ``format'' of the
meeting:} Every day
will be dedicated to a sub-topic of CV's. At least two
invited reviews (lasting about 45 minutes) will be followed by
a few oral contributions of about 30 minutes ; the list of
such contributions will be decided by the S.O.C., whereas
other work would be presented as poster papers. In order to make the
posters ``effective'', every day about an hour will be dedicated
to a short presentation in which each poster author can talk
for 2-3 minutes, announcing the topic of her/his contribution in
few words, explaining on what it is focused. We intend to
leave not only about 10 minutes after every talk for a short discussion,
but also space to an exhaustive discussion session of at least
an hour a day.
