Houston Date: Tue, 6 Apr 93 23:13:43 GMT For those of you who haven't seen the new supernova in M81, don't wait for a moonless night. It's fading fast! Last night (April 6.26 UT), I estimated its magnitude at 11.7 using the chart provided in AAVSO Alert Notice 169. I've read postings of estimates as high as 10.5, and there was some speculation that it might reach magnitude 8 or 9. Yes, please do. It would be an honor! The telescope I used was a 28 cm schmidt-cassegrain. If you need more information, just ask. Here is another visual observation of mine (this time with a 25.4 cm schmidt- cassegrain telescope): April 11.21, magnitude 10.9. I have made several other visual observations, which I will send you after checking my records. This supernova has brightened continuously since I posted my first observation - interesting behavior! Houston Date: Tue, 13 Apr 93 14:13:10 GMT Here are some recent visual magnitude estimates of SN 1993J: April 9.20: 11.5 April 10.18: 11.3 April 11.21: 10.9 The observations on April 9 and 10 were made with a 28 cm schmidt-cassegrain reflector. The observation on the 11th was made with a 25 cm schmidt- cassegrain. Comparison stars of magnitudes 10.7 and 11.7 (from the Thompson and Bryan Supernova Search Charts supplied by AAVSO Alert Notice 169) were used for the estimates. On the 11th, I made an hour long exposure of the supernova with 25 cm telescope. I was puzzled and *very* disappointed when the film came back absolutely blank. This morning, in the shower, I realized that I failed to put the camera setting on 'B', thus taking a 1/250 second exposure instead of one an hour long. :-( Live and learn! Bill, who wants a CCD. ________________________ Schlumberger GeoQuest | 5858 Westheimer | Suite 800 | Houston, TX 77057-5648 |
