Date: Wed, 7 Apr 93 07:34:34 PDT From: alex%bkyim.hepnet@Lbl.Gov (ALEX FILIPPENKO, UC BERKELEY, 510-642-1813) Subject: tidbits on SN 1993J 4-7-93 To the SN 1993J fan club: Taichi Kato's data confirm Tom Balonek's announcement that SN 1993J is on the rise. This suggests that the hydrogen recombination wave is now moving through the ejecta. The hydrogen lines should be getting stronger, and this may partially account for the gradual reddening of the spectrum (due to H-alpha) that we have seen recently. My group has not been able to obtain a low-dispersion optical spectrum for nearly a week at Lick. Does anyone have a very recent (past few days) spectrum? Please send me a description, and I will circulate it through the network. We have heard very little about the optical spectrum ever past April 1 (Fesen and Thorstensen observation, reported in the IAU Circulars). Eric Schlegel (GSFC) notes that the unofficial word is that ASCA has detected 93J, and has seen an iron line! Mark Kidger (IAC, Tenerife --- not La Palma as I had stated in a previous message) notes that he accidentally misinterpreted G. de Vaucouleurs' light curve analysis (probably due to saturation of information combined with use of JDs) in a previous message. They are actually in good agreeement, with an esimated onset day of JD 9072.0. He apologizes for the error. Cheers, Alex Filippenko
