Subject: [vsnet 2138] "Interacting Binary Stars" in Odessa and a Happy New Year 2003!

International Conference "INTERACTING BINARY STARS - 2003"

               August 18-23, 2003, Odessa, Ukraine

The scientific program includes theory, observations, and their
confrontation. Preliminary topics are:

1. Accretion onto gravimagnetic rotators (polars, synchronizing polars,
intermediate polars, systems with neutron stars)
2. Accretion and Positive vs Negative Superhumps in Dwarf Novae
   vs Nova-like cataclysmic stars:
3. symbiotic, WR, double-degenerate and X-ray binaries
4. "classical" eclipsing binaries,
5. Physical variability of components from seconds to decades
(with a special attention to white dwarfs, Delta Scuti, semi-regular
and Mira-type pulsators, flare and Nova events, solar-type activity)
6. Multiple stellar systems and extrasolar planets
7. Advanced Methods for Observations and Mathematic Modeling
8. Inter-Longitude Astronomy Projects
9. Special session on the projects supported by INTAS
10. Interacting Binary Stars and Astronomical Education
11. Attached Summer School for Young Astronomers named after G.Gamow
(Odessa, Chernomorka, August 11-15, 2003, convenor Dr. M.I.Ryabov,
   astro@te.net.ua)

P.S.

1) As a New Year souvenir, may I propose You a small DOS/Windows program
based on the precessing elliptic orbits around a black hole (however, with
unrealistically large time integration step). Hope You will find it fine.

More serious program (NotePad replacer with advanced functions) is at

2) translation from N.A.Morozov (~1890),
by I.L.Andronov

In endless space of cosmos,
Where the stars are shining so bright,
The planets run through the fixed orbits
In darkness of \'eternal night.

The orbits are closed so hardly,
As ' cause of misterious force,
And gaseous shells now surround
The surface of planets, as noise.

The motion rules are eternal.
The days and the nights - in exchange.
The billions, billions years
Pass by, but they have no rest!

But fast are the changes in planets,
And long is their cosmical way.
The powerful source - gravitation
Is changing their shape at some rate.

The molecule will be another,
And life may prefer other way.
Another reaction'll be fathers
Of life for these futurous days.

And then, through the deep atmosphere,
In darkness of planetar' nights,
Will look to celestial spheres
Again many billion eyes.

And, being by New Life encovered,
With some fast tangential speed,
The planets, eternally powered,
Will orbit, the fate as them leads !
