SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT
**********************************************
Workshop
on
MASS-LOSING PULSATING STARS AND THEIR CIRCUMSTELLAR MATTER
--- Newest Results of Observations and Theory ---
Sendai, Japan
May 13-16, 2002
Dear Colleagues,
We are very pleased to announce the international workshop on
"Mass-losing Pulsating Stars and Their Circumstellar Matter" to be held in
Sendai, Japan in May 13-16, 2002. In this second announcement we call for
papers and encourage you to make formal registration for the conference,
which can be made on our on-line registration program on the web site
http://www.astr.tohoku.ac.jp/ws2002/
SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE
New observational technology has revealed many unexpected views of
astronomical objects. This is especially true in the field of the stellar
astrophysics. Large-scale optical and near infrared surveys and the
radio observations of maser sources have given many new insights
about mass-losing pulsating stars. In Japan, a net work of VLBI,
the VERA project, was recently funded. The VERA will be used to
measure the accurate positions of many AGB maser sources.
In spite of these new observational discoveries, however, some old
and fundamental problems like the role of the stellar pulsation in
mass-loss process still remain unresolved.
Our workshop is planned to confront the new observational facts with
the theoretical results. Implications of the new photometric studies and
the high precision interferometric measurements of radio objects will be
fully discussed.
Since the AGB stars are often the brightest stars in the Galaxy, the
study of these stars will be also useful to investigate the structure of
the Galaxy and the mass distribution in nearby galaxies.
The purpose of this workshop is not only to develop the stellar
physics but also to study the structure and history of galaxies.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Participants who wish to contribute to the workshop are requested
to send the title, abstract, and the type of presentation as indicated
in the web page. Electronic submission is recommended but postal
mail to the chairperson of the LOC will be also accepted.
Because the schedule is so tight, only limited contributions will be
accepted for oral presentation. The deadline for the proposal will be
20th of February, 2002. For participants who apply for oral presentation, we
will let you know the type of presentation (oral/poster) accepted for the
conference soon after the selection by the SOC.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Limited amount of travel support may be available. Travel support will be
considered only for those from abroad who could not participate in the
conference if no financial support is available. To apply for travel
support, please send mail, before February 20, 2002, to the chairperson of
the SOC, Prof. M. Takeuti

PROCEEDINGS
The proceedings of the workshop will be published. The registered
participant will receive a free copy of the proceedings. The guideline of
contributions will be announced later.

TRANSPORTATION TO SENDAI
Sendai International Airport keeps airlines with Korea and China, and some
islands in the Pacific Ocean, but has no services with other countries.
People from the other foreign countries are recommended to arrive at
Tokyo/Narita International Airport. The most convenient route to Sendai from
Tokyo is the Shin-kansen, a super-express. It will take about two hours from
Tokyo or Ueno railway station to Sendai railway station.
For people who want to fly to Sendai International Airport, information
about the transportation between the airport and the downtown Sendai is
available on the web page at
