SCIENTIFIC COMMISSION E
SESSION E1.1: Gamma Ray Burst Afterglow Physics

Main Scientific Organizer (MSO):
Elena Pian - INAF, Astronomical Observatory of Trieste, Italy - pian@ts.astro.it

Deputy Organizer (DO):
Luigi Piro - Institute of Space Astrophysics (IAS), CNR, Rome, Italy - piro@ias.rm.cnr.it

Scientific Organizing Committee

J. Fishman, D. Frail, A. Fruchter, K. Hurley, S. Kulkarni, M. Matsuoka, P.
Meszaros, I. Mitrofanov, T. Piran, M. Rees, G. Ricker, E. van den Heuvel,
A. Parmar, E. Pian, L. Piro

Rationale

During the five years following the detection of the first afterglow of a
Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB), a large amount of multiwavelength data of GRB remnants
has been collected with satellites and ground-based telescopes. These data have
provided a tool to investigate the physics and the environment of this high
energy phenomenon, and will ultimately open a way to identify the astrophysical
source of the burst. Developments over the last year have crossed over several
other topics in astrophysics, e.g. star formation and evolution, supernova
explosions, the interstellar medium, high redshift galaxies, the origin of
cosmic rays, cosmology, and the formation of structures in the early universe.
This COSPAR session will include a number of extended review talks on
observational and theoretical aspects of afterglow physics, GRB environments,
progenitor models, cosmological implications, and links to elementary particle
physics. We expect that this will be an opportunity to present new significant
results.

General Information and Logistics

The E1.1 Session will tentatively take place on the morning and afternoon of
October 12, 2002. The relevant information on this Session and on the 34th
COSPAR Scientific Assembly, as well as logistic information (traveling, hotel
reservations) can be obtained at the URL:
http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/COSPAR.html.

Registration (deadline for Pre-registration: 16 August 2002)

A registration form is available at http://www.aiaa.org/wsc2002/contact.cfm.
The early deadline for pre-registration is 16 August 2002; pre-conference: 17
Aug 2002 - 09 Oct 2002.

Financial Support (deadline: 1 May 2002)

A very limited amount of money will be available to facilitate participation in the
34th COSPAR Scientific Assembly. Please read the instructions at
http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/houston2002/finance.htm, and use the accompanying
application form when appropriate. Financial support requests should be sent to
COSPAR (cospar@copernicus.org) *and* to the MSO (pian@ts.astro.it), NO LATER THAN
MAY 1st, 2002.

Abstract Submission (deadline: 1 May 2002)

Participants willing to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation at
the COSPAR E1.1 Session are invited to do so by following the prescriptions
available at
http://www.copernicus.org/COSPAR/houston2002/abstract-format-general.htm.

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that each participant sends his/her abstract both to
the COSPAR Secretariat (cospar@copernicus.org) *and* to the Session MSO
(pian@ts.astro.it), NO LATER THAN MAY 1st, 2002.

Papers Presentation

The proceeding papers of the COSPAR E1.1 Session will be published in Advances
in Space Research, Elsevier Science Ltd. (Editors: N. Masetti, E. Pian, L.
Piro). Solicited papers appearing in ASR may be up to 10 pages long.
Contributed papers may be up to 6 pages long.

We look forward to seeing you in Houston.
