[vsnet-computing 20] CAT-ASTRO: Computers & Technology in Astronomy

Hey guys. A new mailing list has just been setup for discussion about
computer and technology issues in astronomy. The idea is to form an
informal discussion group where people can post experiences and ask for
help on issues pertaining to astronomical computing and technology. More
information can be found at the URL below:

Below is a more detailed description. Signup by sending "subscribe
cat-astro" to majordomo@lists.io.com . Please forward this to friends you
think would be interested. Thanks.

CAT-ASTRO
Computing and Technology in Astronomy Chat Group

Purpose: To provide an informal method of communication for people
interested in computing and technology issues that relate to the field of
astronomy. This is a chat group so the signal to noise ratio will be high.

Description: The Astronomical Computing & Technology Chat Group is an
e-mail discussion forum where users and administrators of
technology in the field of astronomy can discuss any issue on their mind.
This can range from esoteric questions about state-of-the-art telescope hardware to more
general questions about how to get grant funding or deal with beaurocracy.
This is a chat group, not a moderated forum so general chit-chat about
life in the astronomical world is also encouraged. Astronomy-related jokes
will likely abound.
The original idea for the group came about when the
administrator switched careers from the commercial IT world to the
non-profit world of astronomy. Entire support structures existed for IT
professionals that simply were not available when it came to getting help
with astronomy-specific problems (such as installing IRAF, understanding
the NASA grant proposal reporting process, programming for the celestial
sphere, etc.).
For this chat group to be a success it is important that it be
kept informal and light-hearted. Please do not be afraid to post a
question, suggestion, or anecdote. Everyone is here to help each other. If
you are looking for a highly moderated and formal discussion group then
this is not the place. We want to help each other, but also to have fun. A
sense of humor is as important as your technical skill set!
