I note Marv Baldwin's comment. Whilst I can see this viewpoint may I ask -
does it ever happen? And how can it if you end up with several stars of the
same magnitudes available for comparison. You'd need to go back to the
original observations and try to determine which stars had been used. This
is usually impossible. Normally the result of a bad sequence is that
observers give up that field and go on to a star with a better set of
comparisons. Brian Marino and I once tried unscrambling the visual measures
of eta Carinae which had a very bad sequence. In spite of complete
information, about all that it proved was that the visual data for about two
decades was virtually useless. But any complaints receive the same answer -
'let's be consistent and we'll sort it out later'. Small wonder that it's
hard to get people to measure sequences for the visual observers except on
completely new objects.
