Adding to what Brian Skiff said, you might look at
Drissen, et al., 1994, AJ 107, 2172, where they
looked at the plate overlap region of the southern
survey plates for variables. This gets you a few more
observations, though in just the corners of the plates.
The bottom line is that USNO-A catalogued about
500,000,000 stars. You can generally estimate that
about 1 percent of stars are easily detectable variables.
This means there should be some 5M variables on the
survey plates. It would be more unusual that you did *not*
find a variable when looking at some field.
