I tend to use different methods when estimating according to the stars brightness. Most of my observing is at faint levels and depending on sky conditions I use averted vision to locate faint comparison stars or the outbursting star. When I know they are visible I directly compare the comparison star to the outbursting star going from one to the other until I'm satisfied. In the mid range I still look at the comparison stars (not staring) with slightly quicker glances. The brighter stars are estimated with quick glances trying not to directly look at each star.
