[vsnet-chat 3581] re NSV 12041 again

Examination of USNOFS PMM server plates reveal that the object believed to
be NSV 12041 at 19h 27m 53.7s -21d 35' 57 " (2000) _is_ variable
[fortunately there are 5 red plates for this star, including 4 IIIaF ones].

One arcmin field views are _temporarily_ at
http://vsnet.nofs.navy.mil/tmp/fchaahACa_fch.html

The most IMPORTANT thing though is that there is a star just immediately
north : if NSV 12041 is viewed using the above co-ordinates and using a 1
arcmin view with the 2MASS image server at
http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu/applications/2MASS/ReleaseVis/ it can be seen
that this star to the north has become merged with this NSV 12041 candidate
in 2MASS via the diffraction spike of the nearby BD star, thus making a
strange shaped object.

This may explain the slight 1 arcsec problem with the 2MASS astrometry
which Brian noted, ie that both 2MASS and USNO A2.0 were to ICRS but the
positions differed slightly for this object.

There are actually 3 more faint stars very immediately south of NSV 12041
as well, merged with and occasionally "hidden" by it depending on how
bright it is. These are probably too faint to be "seen" by the 2MASS
equipment though, especially if they are not particularly red.
