Last I saw Trinh Thuan's name on a paper I think he had a Univ. of
Virginia affiliation.
The Thuan-Gunn system was cooked up mainly to maximize throughput of
detectors while minimizing sky brightness, and thus optimized for very deep
extragalactic work. Most broadband systems are intertransformable for _stars_
of ordinary color (i.e. no major molecular bands, and without strong
reddening), so to some extent specific passbands are not so important. But
for any real precision, well under 1 percent, matching passbands and careful
reductions are indispensable.
