I think of the classic case of such oscillations as being DK Lac =
Nova Lac 1950, whose lightcurve exhibited just the sorts of seemingly
irregular pulses as V1494 Aql shows. See "The Galactic Novae" book by
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, starting page 132.
