So we have 'underwhelming' evidence in both cases IMHO.
I think we need another example of a GRB error box that
includes *only* a new supernova. Note that, if the
supernova is the source of the gamma rays, the signature
of this event is different than all of the other localized
GRBs, and the distance to the source is far less than
in other events. Like I said, there are probably several mechanisms.
The more of these events that are followed, the better
we will understand them. The time regime that is little
understood now is from burst to ~8hrs afterward, and that
is where amateurs will be able to contribute the most.
If the beeper system works and enough people get involved,
or vsnet-alert includes both SAX and HETE positions,
or observers work directly with a professional
team, some amateur somewhere is going to have his/her
moment of fame.
