[vsnet-chat 2474] Re: [AAVSO-DIS] GRB notification process

Regarding visual observations of GRBs, what about the case of SN 1998bw? Has it been proven not to be connected to GRB 980425?
SN 1998 bw was visually observed for many a night by myself despite rather poor sky conditions at the time.

I have often speculated that the nature of the effect of the GRBs is analogue to that of QSO's. It is accepted that BL Lacs look bright because their energetic jets are aligned towards us, which is not the case with 'ordinary' quasars of which only a small part, ie the 'diffuse' energy is seen. Depending on geometrical emissions (specifically the width or size of the top angle of the jet) this can make a difference in the order of millions.
Is it not possible that we saw the diffuse GR 'radiation' of the relatively nearby GRB 980425, while in other cases we 'intercept' the energetic jet of much more distant 'events' in which case the optical signature is short lived...
Just speculation of an amateur.....

By no means am I suggesting that interested parties not
attempt to observe an OT visually. I'm just stating that
I think the chances are so slim that I personally am not
going to give it a try.
