Another paper with stars measured near galaxies is by Poulain & Neito, which contains UBVRI results for about 200 southern early-type galaxies. The list below shows coordinates and BVRI data for about 80 stars they measured. In no case here are the stars isolated from the galaxies, but instead are mostly quite difficult objects near their centers. As a result, many of the data are clearly erroneous. This is easy to spot from the consistency of the star colors. Roughly speaking for stars of ordinary color the V-R color _must_ be about 0.6(B-V), and V-I _must_ be about 1.1(B-V). As an example, the first star in the list has B-V = 0.80, V-R = -0.06, and V-I = 0.96. If we accept that B-V is correct, then V-R is in error by half a magnitude(!), and V-I is marginally acceptable within very generous uncertainties. The B-V and V-I colors are much more likely to be correct, since very blue stars as implied by the V-R color are extremely rare outside the galactic plane. Such discrepant results almost certainly result from the problematic subtraction of the galaxian background light, and demonstrate the difficulty of doing this with a single-channel photometer on a 1m-class telescope, as was the case here. Some of the data are okay (mostly the brighter stars, naturally), but each case must be considered carefully. Again, observations with a modest telescope and CCD could improve these results markedly.
