[vsnet-chat 2299] GM Sgr

What is the current SPECULATION about the nature of GM
SGR? What kind of a critter is it?

Downes et al (AJ 1995 110.1824) said it isn't a CV
(were they looking at Goranskij's object or Luyten's
red star?) Their spectrum is quite red, in apparent
contradiction to their note that the star had colors
of an A type star. They did note the fact that the
object found by Goranskij was distinct and different
from Luyten's star and that their chart in the atlas
was wrong, so they should have had the right star.

Could the early type spectrum fade completely and the
late star's light dominate the system at minimum?

The spectroscopy by Ayani this week (reported to CBAT
and on VS Net)is consistent with a CV type object.
Concurrent X-rays suggest there is perhaps a magnetic
field channelling of a stream onto a compact object,
which to me says it is a CV.
