Dear friends,
There are many variables and suspected variables in the sky, which have been
reported but which have not (yet) found their way into GCVS/NSV. For many
reasons, it would be very useful to have such stars compiled in one single
list. For each star should be given accurate position (J2000.0) and preliminary
name, with the stars in R.A. order.
Among the variable star acronyms we find:
Acronym Meaning
------- -------
BeV Bernhard Variable
BnV Bengtsson Variable
BV Bamberg Variable
FASTT Flagstaff Astrometric Scanning Transit Telescope
GR G. Romano
HadV Haseda Variable
HBV Hamburg-Bergedorf Variable
HV Harvard Variable
LD L. Dahlmark
MisV MISAO Variable
S Sonneberg
SVS Soviet Variable Star
TASS The Amateur Sky Survey
TASV The Astronomer Suspected Variable
TAV The Astronomer Variable
TmzV Takamizawa Variable
VV Vatican Variable
Wr Weber
Even a partial compilation (LD + TmzV + MisV etc) would be very valuable.
Once such a list is done, it is important that somebody is ready to update
the list when new variables are discovered and reported in VSNET or IBVS.
When new IAU namelists are released, the stars should be retained in the
list, but with their official names indicated. When new editions of GCVS
or NSV appear, stars found there should be deleted from the list.
Of course, the list should be seen only as an aid to people interested
in variable stars, without any requirement of completeness, without
any obligations.
There is work to be done ... any volunteers ???
