GM Sgr -A Question of Identity. I refer to recent discussions concerning the correct identification of GM Sgr. There is a risk of needless confusion and duplication of namings for two separate variables - Luyten's variable and Goranskij's variable (IBVS 3464). In vsnet-chat 2213 (sequence for GM Sgr) Bruce Sumner has evidently located the historically named GM Sgr (Luyten's star), and published a precise position. This brings the issue of correct identity to a head. Luyten's star has been known for many decades as GM Sgr (even though its exact location has been unclear), while Goranskij's star is only 1'12" due N. Unfortunately, and unwisely, the long-established name GM Sgr has been "grafted" onto the new variable. This is in conflict with an established principle in naming astronomical objects (not only variable stars) - "When a unique name/designation is given to an object, that name should never be transferred to another object". Even when a variable star is proven to be non-existent or nonvariable (as a number have been in the GCVS), the NAME is neither used again nor reallocated to another object. It is clear that GM Sgr (the name historically given to Luyten's star) was "temporarily" lost due to imprecise coordinates, but NEVER classed as nonexistent. This matter now seems seems to be moving steadily towards resolution. I would like to see Goranskij's variable given a unique designation to avoid further confusion. Coordinates: Goranskij's var. = GSC 6848.03786 18:19:21.64 -25:24:25.7 J2000 Luyten's var. 18:19:21.5 -25 25 38 J2000 Of course, the final proof would be to reexamine archival plates, now that there is clear candidate for GM Sgr (Luyten's star).
