Several of his dwarf novae with frequent outbursts are much less active
nowadays :-)

I would not necessarily trust variable star colors derived from USNO catalog
data. The plates may have been taken on different dates.

That's exactly what my (forthcoming) paper is about.
Btw, CV Aqr has TWO observed maxima - at the time of the brighter one a
minor planet was very close to the cataloged position of CV Aqr.  
In my paper both maxima will be discussed.
