In case anyone is not aware, USNO-A2.0 has been released and is being
distributed on 11 CDs. The files are also on our ftp site at
http://ftp.nofs.navy.mil/pub/outgoing/dgm/usnoa
(but don't bother downloading unless you have a T-1 line, as there are
some 8GB of material). You have to contact Dave Monet
if you need a personal copy, but read the instructions on our web
server (http://vsnet.nofs.navy.mil) before making the request.
USNO-A2.0 is similar to USNO-A1.0, except it uses the Tycho reference
frame and so has better astrometry. The better astrometry also improved
the match on the plate overlap region, and therefore added a few million
stars to the catalog (which is why it now takes 11 disks).
Some people are using my SERPCA program for accessing the USNO-A
catalog. I've updated this program for A-2.0 and placed it on
http://ftp.nofs.navy.mil/pub/outgoing/aah/usnoa/serpca2.exe
for the PC executable; serpca2.for contains the Fortran source code.
It is a very simple program that uses a user-supplied central RA/DEC
plus a box width, and returns all USNOA stars within that box.
