I have today spoken to Bob Argyle about the astrographic plate taken at
the RGO around which much of the debate on this star revolves. The plate was
taken in difficult conditions near sunset and is very dark. The object
measured is near the plate limit and is not at all obvious. Those are the
bald facts.
Coupled with
(i) the view of McNaught who inspected the plate, that the object is a
plate flaw
(ii) the lack of a corresponding object at this position on the POSS plates
and (iii) the large difference in position (6 arc min) between that
reported by Branchett and the accurate position from the astrographic
plate
all support the view that Nova Sco 1981 was not seen on this plate.
Clearly the best course is to re-examine the plate and try to make a
definitive judgement about the image. Unfortunately, with the closure of
the RGO this plate, along with all the others from the RGO's archives, is
incarcerated in a repository in London and I have yet to find out how
accessible it might be. Other photographs of this object should also be
reviewed.
