Cf. vsnet-chat 1317 http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/Mail/vsnet-chat/msg01317.html Dear SN fans, Stefano Pesci wrote in ISN-chat ML; > on August 26.9 UT I've observed NGC 1961 during my > visual supernova search and nothing unusual was seen > to limiting magnitude 15.8, using a 20" f/4.5 telescope. This information (and the same note has appeared in IAUC 7019) should be correct, but I guess it is misleading some. Indeed, SN 1998eb exists, but its magnitude is lower than Pesci's limit. It is clearly shown in the image provided by discoverers; http://astron.berkeley.edu/~bait/sn98eb.html. Also, Dr. Stapper has kindly provided the image of NGC 1961 taken by 8" SCT with ST-7, 8*5 minutes exposure, at Sept. 20.89UT. It is available at: http://ftp.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/pub/vsnet/SNe/sn1998eb/sn1998eb.jpg. Sincerely Yours, Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan yamaoka@rc.kyushu-u.ac.jp
