There was an interesting paper presented at the last NACAA {National
Australian Convention of Amateur Astronomers} in 1996. The paper suggested
SNII type supernova might be enhanced by between 5-70 times normal supernova
rates in galaxies that have had recent bursts of star formation. In
particular galaxies that show a high atomic to molecular hydrogen gas mass
ratios. The paper talked about spirals in particular and I can't remember if
ellipticals were mentioned.
An observing group was set up to monitor about 100 Sbc-Sb spirals to test
the hypothsis.
The chap organising the work was Ian Wilson in the Brisbane Astronomical
Society. If your interested I can chase up his email address
Peter Lowe.

ps. This is the first time I've sent anything to this chat group. If I've
sent it to the wrong address.. I apologise.
