To, All VS Observers
I refer to the recent letters that have appeared on these pages about
standardisation of variable star charts.
This has been of concern to us all for a long time now, and some
discussion has already taken place between the AAVSO and the BAA VSSC,
but without, as yet, finding a suitable way forward.
More recently, at the Spring '97 meeting of the AAVSO in Switzerland,
Dick Chambers, of the Crayford Manor House Astronomical Society in the
UK, suggested there might be a way to standardise future charts although
he felt existing charts would always be a problem.
Dick subsequently formulated his suggestion into a working document and
his proposals were discussed at a meeting of the "Professional-Amateur
Liaison Committee - Variable Stars" (set up some 10 years ago to foster
collaboration between professionals and amateurs in the UK). This was
then forwarded to Janet Mattei at the AAVSO for discussion at their next
Chart Committee meeting and a response is now awaited.
Basically, the proposal is to follow a similar procedure to that employed
by the International Standards Organisation with charts for NEW variables
being agreed between at least three variable star organisations and
designated accordingly.
I don't believe that this forum is the correct place to discuss the
proposals in detail at this stage, and not until Dr Mattei has had the
chance to comment formerly on them. The correct way forward will
probably to be to submit the proposals to other VS organisations for
comment before a more "open" approach is taken. However, having said
that, if anyone does wish to study the proposals they can contact me at
any time.
