Search of Harvard Plates for Nova (?) Plassen 1927
Harvard College Observatory has several plates taken of the region
of Camelopardalis in which Plassen reported his nova. The chart
provided in L'Astronomie, 53, 9, 1929, is very poor, but a
plausible identification of chart with images on the plates
is possible. It should be noted that this identification requires
a switch in east-west from that published - I assume that O stands
for west ("ouest"), and this seems to be really east.
Nothing suspicious appears on three plates taken in October 1927,
one near the beginning, one in the middle and one near the end of
the month. On one of the plates I found markings "2," "3,"
and "9?," corresponding to the numbers on the 1929 chart.
This suggests that sometime, probably shortly after the article
appeared in L'Astronomie, a researcher here at Harvard also
tried unsuccessfully to find the "nova."
The announcement in 1929 mentions plates in France on which the
"nova" appears. Perhaps these plates still exist and can be
consulted. A more accurate finding chart, made from a plate,
would be extremely useful in locating the object Plassen seems
to have seen.
